By 1900, when Palomar Mountain was populous with children, three schools high up on Palomar Mountain had been established: Malava, Palomar, and Cedar Grove. Going from east to west, the Malava School District started in 1877, the Palomar School District started in 1891, and the Cedar Grove School District started in 1898. Due to population
changes, the Malava School combined with the Palomar School in 1903, the Cedar Grove School closed in 1906, and the Palomar School closed in 1908. In subsequent years, schools opened and closed on Palomar Mountain, and the final school closed in 2008.
